Week 22: Volunteering with Mormon Helping Hands

Ok, I will probably say this again.. probably a lot of times in the mission.. But this week was by far the greatest week I have had in the mission! It was one of those weeks where you swear you are going bald because your hair is falling out (probs stress..? OR weather), when you tell yourself, “No. There is NO way it is 6:30am already. I just fell asleep!” That week where you have that awkward eye twitching thing because you are so tired… Where you are looking for the keys for a solid 20 minutes, then realize they are on a lanyard on your neck… Then that same day forget the keys and lock yourself out..again.

That stuff doesn’t even matter compared to the reward at the end of the day though. No matter how tired you are, there is always something that keeps us going, that makes us not really care about how tired we are.. or if we go bald… Ok not the bald part, I’d like to go home with hair…

Hehehehe...

We had so many miracles, prayers answered, even one of my life-long dreams come true!! You know the group “Mormon Helping Hands”? Well it has been one of my dreams to volunteer with them and I finally got to! It was just ten times easier because I already live in Peru so I just put a jersey on and was a part of the team! We went and helped at an orphanage! I could die happy.. I didn’t want to take the “super cute” yellow jersey off. I would love to volunteer with them again in the future! How cool would it be to come to Peru as a fam and do some service projects?! Cough cough…next October…I’m telling ya, Canada is not THAT exciting.. Plus they have llamas here. Just think about it.. and just kidding about Canada not being cool! My best friend (Camry) is serving there and Grandpa served there..and my amazing pensionista is from there.. so gotta be nice or she will stop Pancake Friday!

My pensionista and I have an awesome system where I give her 3 sol and she buys blueberries just for me… because I have a sharing problem… jk
My pensionista bought me a water heater…she loves me
I always have to deal with guys posting sitting on a huge Elk Head so this isnt so bad….
Gardening.. This garden needs David Springer!!!!
So we did service all morning Saturday and it was a blast. I don’t have a bunch of photos but some! And I sort of accidentally missed the big zone picture so that’s cool.. But they were supposedly taking photos for the Liahona so who knows you might find your child goofing off in the background.

Our lessons went GREAT this week! Holy cow.. This gospel is so cool. Last Monday when P-day ended we went and had a Noche de Hogar with our investigator and her ENTIRE family! We had a lesson plan and last minute had the impression to share a video about temples. We talked about how the temple is the meta (goal), that we are not here to just want a bunch of baptisms, but to bring them HOME. We talked about how families are eternall.. That ALL of your family can learn about the gospel and we can all see each other again. I felt the impression that I should talk about Grandpa, and after saw that our investigator was crying and she told us that she wants to see her grandpa again too.. She has never got emotional with us and her little girl was VERY concerned, wiping away her tears for her and hugging her super tight. The Spirit was very strong. She really wants to do baptisms for the dead for her grandpa! She really wants to get to the temple, and I know she will! You know when someone is ready for the Gospel when they do things on their own.. read, go to church, etc! We don’t have to remind her! For the other night it was her, her dad and mom (who are just as amazing), and her two little girls! (One is 8 so she can be baptized with them!) Her husband loved the lesson and asked so many good questions! He is super nice and really loves his family. Honestly there is no way to describe then on email. I wish you could meet them! Please please pray for their family! I can’t wait to tell you more! They are absolutely incredible. Wow really I just want to keep writing about them..

We have 13 new investigators… 13! One is a family of 6! We are so excited for this week to teach them more! So that is super exciting! We have a busy week. Uh not sure what else to say.. I got a calling as the new English teacher! So if you guys have any favorite talks you want to send in English AND Spanish so I can copy them, maybe that would be fun! I could have them study it in Spanish and then English for a week.. I don’t know.. any ideas?

My friend distracting me during district meeting… My finger looks fat…
This week I studied an amazing talk by the future Relief Society Pres, Sarah Laurel Springer! It’s called “Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit.” Highly recommend it.. It is beautiful! Wow I am a proud sister.. I read it once, then again, then again marking all of the scriptures, quotes by other talks, then may or may not have also shared it at district meeting (but translated a little to Spanish). The missionaries love it! Hermana Tayacke has it right now and is reading it haha so Sarah has been adopted into our district as one of our missionaries basically. I have really been pondering Mosiah 4:19 a lot this week.. I didn’t really think about that scripture and I know I have just passed over it probably a billion times.. now it has a totally different meaning for me. It is a VERY important scripture to remember. I would quote a lot of things from her talk but it is better if you just read her words!

I feel like I am set for life with you guys haha someday I’ll be printing off talks by Sarah, buying books from Carly, buying furniture, cute headbands, etc from Manny.. Make Dad help me in my garden.. Steal Mom’s incredible recipes!! Set for life. You guys are pretty cool.

The other week Dad said in his email, “I am really surprised at how well you have transitioned to the mission life! Either that or you aren’t telling the rest..” Honestly, there are really hard days of course.. but on those days sometimes I just have to think of the finish line with you guys! We are going to see each other and it will be as though time hadn’t really passed! And there’s nothing else more important for this time I have than to serve Heavenly Father. This really is HIS time and is such a small thing compared to eternity and it is going to be so cool to tell you guys all about it and bring you to Peru one day! Also I always remember this one quote, “Leave your family for a short time so that others can be with their families for eternity.” The mission is so cool. It’s only a waste of time and a waste of the Lord’s time if I were to be unhappy or not work hard and complain.. That’s lame. I love learning and growing closer to Heavenly Father every day!

My companion is doing great too. I’ve learned a lot from her! We are very different but that’s how we have been learning new things! Her teaching is incredible.. and she has the funniest sense of humor which at the beginning you wouldn’t really guess! Also she really does her homework about the doctrine and during companion study I learn so much.. Honestly I hope I can be a missionary like her when I have 14 months!

Well not sure what else! A lot happened this week! We got locked in the church on accident, haha that was interesting.. Thankfully until someone came there were lots of Liahonas to read!

Love you all so much! Keep reading the Book of Mormon and being missionaries!

Siempre,

Ash Ketchum
