Leave Your Nets

" Just as a man does not really desire food until he is hungry, so he does not desire the salvation of Christ until he knows why he needs Christ."
- ( Pres. Benson, Ens. May 1987)

Those who follow Christ are known as His disciples.
" The world for disciple and the word for discipline both come from the same Latin root - Discipulus, which means pupil. It emphasizes practice or exercise. Self discipline and self control are consistent and permanent characteristics of the followers of Jesus...What is discipleship? It is primarily obedience to the Savior." - ( Pres. James E. Faust, Ens. Nov. 2006)

For us to be disciples, we have to want it as bad as we want to breath..What if we woke up each morning saying, " I hope I get air today.." Haha kinda weird..But really..What if we woke up every morning saying, " I hope to be a great disciple today."

One of my favorite scriptures about discipleship is in Luke 5: 1-11.
And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
These were EXPERIENCED fisherman.. They were successful.. Imagine someone coming up saying, " Hey let me show you how to fish. Cast your nets to the other side." Sometimes we are asked to switch course... Sometimes the saviors asks us to follow us..at the most awkward or random times.. But no matter how comfortable we are..HE knows the right way. If the Savior asks us to do something..We need to do it or we will lose the blessings that could have come from it. The forsook all, and followed him. They let go of the net even though it was their life.

Sometimes leaving something or switching course can be scary.. If we have fear, we need to elevate our faith. Put our own desires away, to focus on what is important, and through that we will find true happiness.

Anything can catch us, consume us. What are nets that are catching us in life? I guarantee we ALL have these entangling nets... I promise you that if you decide to untangle yourself from those nets and follow Christ's footsteps and truly seek Christ we will find true happiness and receive uncountable blessings.

" Following Christ is not a casual or occasional practice but a continuous commitment and way of life that applies at all times and in all places. - ( Elder Oaks, Ens. May 2013)
